MYTHS OF LOVE

The Greeks had great myths of love: Pygmalion and Galatea, Psyche and Cupid (Eros), Apollo and Daphne, Orpheus and Eurydice, Pluto and Persephone (Proserpina), Perseus and Andromeda, etc.

All those myths of love are beautiful and they teach us about the meaning of love. Let's study some of them:

PYGMALION AND GALATEA.

This is a pretty myth where a man (Pygmalion) supposes to hate women; but his masterpiece is a statue (Galatea) which is a woman. How this can be?

According to myth Pygmalion was really good making sculptures. One day he decided to make a woman. He made it so perfect and he got in love of it. He was bringing flowers, hugging her and kissing her.  The cold statue was not returning any love back to Pygmalion. Venus, the goddess of love, saw everything. She found the love from Pygmalion so pure and so beautiful and she decided to give life to Galatea. So the statue got life to make happy Pygmalion.

The matter here is: What all this mean?
Pygmalion represents a person who has real love in his/her heart. Love is not easy to find and it is so easy to lose! Now days we can find many divorces all around. People are getting married today and divorcing tomorrow. Why? What is wrong? People seem not to believe in love anymore.

Everybody has a lot of fantasies about love and that is a big problem because love is not the way we want, but the way it is. Life is not a fairy tale where they say: “And they lived happy ever after.” Life is real and life has problems. If some one gets married to “live happy ever after” then disappointment will be the outcome.

Here is the meaning of the “rock.” Rocks are not easy to shape. But Pygmalion did and made of a woman a masterpiece. Love is not easy to hold in the heart. Just if a person is brave enough to face all kind of problems with the person who loves. You can not love and run away from problems or give up at the first problem. Only when you really love then you face and bear everything for love. Love is something which starts with a glance or a smile; but it could die if you are not brave enough to fight for who you love. Developing love is possible, but you need to understand it is not easy because it is a rock. So you have to make the most beautiful sculpture of love with the person who loves you.

PSYCHE AND CUPID (EROS)

This is a really great myth. I really love it and its meaning is marvelous!
PSYCHE was the daughter of a king and she had two sisters. Psyche was born with a great beauty and her sisters were full of envy because everybody was looking for Psyche and not for them. Psyche’s sisters got married, but she remained single.

One day her father went to the oracle to ask about Psyche’s destiny. He was told to leave her alone on top of a mountain and a wing serpent will take her away. The king came back really sorry and did what he was told.
Psyche was left alone on the mountain. Suddenly a nice win came to caress her and she fell asleep. When she woke up she was in front of a nice mansion. She was told to go in and the people inside said it was her house and they were her servants. She was invited to take a bath and to eat and so she did.

The real owner of that great mansion was the one who sent the servants to get het in. The deal was she could stay under two conditions:

1>    She must not ask for his identity and, therefore, could not see his face.

2>    She must not let anyone in the mansion, not even her family.

What other choice did she have? Of course, she accepted. She was living a wealthy life and happy.

One day she saw her sisters passing by and she asked “the stranger” to let them come to see her. He did not want, but after she begged with tears he accepted and warmed her that from it something not good would happen.

Her sisters were impressed of the mansion. It was even better than their wealthy houses. They got full of envy and they made a plot. They started making questions and when they found out Psyche did not know who her husband was, then they found the opportunity. They told her about the oracle and how the oracle said a wing serpent would take her. So, they said, that winged serpent was his husband.  They left after that, but psyche was confused now.

That night she wanted to see who her husband was.  When he was sleeping she grabbed a lamp to see his face and she did not see a wigged serpent; but the most beautiful man. It was CUPID! She was so astonished, totally mute and trembling… She did not notice a drop of oil going down to Cupid’s body (Some versions say “his face” other “his shoulders). Cupid opened his eyes to find out how Psyche broke her promise, so he fled with not words.

What happened after that?

Cupid had gone to heaven to his mother Venus. Some versions say she got jealous. The fact is, she did not like what happened to his son.
Psyche was looking for her love all around; but she could not find him. So, she went to ask Venus for help. Nevertheless, Venus was “mad” and, therefore, she imposed some hard task for her to accomplish.
Psyche did all the tasks. She received help every single time. Finally, Venus sent her to see Persephone, who was in the underworld, too give her a box so Persephone would put some of her beauty in a box. Persephone did as Venus asked. Psyche, on the way back, wanted to see what was in the box. Yes, she opened it and she found nothing; but she got into a deep sleep!
Cupid forgave Psyche, when he knew about her deeds. So, cupid went to help his love and sent her with the box to Venus. Cupid went to see Jupiter and ask for help. Jupiter married them, so nobody had authority to intervene between those two lovers!
THE MEANING:

I really love this Roman-Greek myth!

First we have to clarify a few things:
APRODITE (VENUS) is the goddess of LOVE.
EROS (CUPID) is the son of Aphrodite (Venus).
Erotic comes from EROS and Aphrodisiac comes from Aphrodite. So, now days Eros and Aphrodite are related to sex and not necessary to love, which is totally wrong! Obviously someone can have sex without love, but love and sex are together!

In ancient time EROS and APRHODITE were seen in a different way. Some people think Aphrodite had many lovers, but it is a misunderstanding. The problem is: People take things too literal! People lack of imagination cannot understand the ancient meanings because they were written not for the intellectual mind, but for imagination and heart!
Psyche (Soul) needs love, but real love. A very pure and innocent love. You might say: It does not exist. I tell you this: It is in your heart, but “bad” experiences made it fade!

The first love is the most similar to that kind of love. You give yourself 100%, the first time. But, usually it was a mistake. Why? Because people follow their senses and not their heart! People rush and love does not!

Our mind betrays our heart and it asks: Is this the right person? How can I know? And so on. Love is a matter of the heart, not a matter of the mind. Our mind think, it does not feel. Love wants only one thing: MAKE THE OTHER PERSON HAPPY! Our mind one many things and one is: find someone to make me happy.

You might not know when loves come to you; but the more your mind thinks about it the more you will lose the love you already have. Some people are in love, but the more they argue (using their mind) the more they lose the love they have and the end is: Divorce!

So, when you feel in love do not make too many questions, do not argue too much, Just enjoy love! When you put your mind in the place your heart has to be then Cupid goes away and you lose the love you have!

It is hard to recover love! It is hard to feel real love, but there is not a way to find it. It comes or not, that it is!

They say VENUS was putting trials for Psyche because Venus was mad and jealous; but I see it this way: Love needs to have trials to see if it will endure and bear all difficulties. If it does not, then it is not love.

How many divorces we have in modern time? Too many! Why? Because people get married when they are not in love, just because they like each other and that is not love. So, when problems come they cannot bear the difficulties. Some others who are in love, in the beginning, they destroy it criticizing their couple, bothering their couple, not paying attention to their couple and so on. Cupid then goes away and usually it does not come back again. It might if it is real love!

So if you love someone, please, use your heart more than your mind. You most appreciate the one you love or… Maybe someone else will do that for you.

APPOLO AND DAPHNE!

Love how beautiful is to have someone to love and have her/his love! Is there anything more important in life? I really doubt it!

When Cupid comes to you and shot your heart than you are done. Everything else will be meaningless! Everything else, not eve life will have a reason anymore if you lose the one who makes you tremble and feel fool. No matter what you believe, not matter what you do not believe, love just wants one thing: Make the other person happy!

This myth of love is another one so beautiful and full of meaning. Once your heart is taken then your life is taken and your happiness too!

Apollo (See picture) the son of Jupiter, the one who could shot any animal or beast with his arrows, could not do anything after Cupid shot him with his arrows!

This great hero killed the horrible and dangerous serpent Python, but he was powerless to Cupid’s arrows!

That horrible serpent was the nergative serpent (Check THE MEANING OF THE SERPENT) of the garden where Adam and Eve were!

He was celebrating his victor over that monster when he so the innocent Cupid playing with his arrows. I do not believe he was there randomly, but with a divine porpoise.

Apollo full of “arrogance” was joking about Cupid’s arrows. He was boasting about his victory and telling Cupid he was not worthy to use those arrows. So cupid told him he could not bear one of his arrows and shot the god on his chest (Where else?)

What happen after that?

Cupid got another arrow to shot Daphne, a nymph the daughter of the river god Peneus. Daphne decided not to get married and her father was asking her for a sun in law. But because of her pleads he desisted. She did not take care of herself in order to avoid any suitor.

Apollo had his arrow deep down in his heart; so he fell in love and Daphne was the chosen one! The god did not care she was not taking care of her beauty, He was picturing her how beautiful she would look with some care. She ran away from the god. She did not care Apollo was the son of Jupiter or how handsome he was.

Finally Apollo caught her! The nymph was really scared; she called his father for help. He came to help her making his body a laurel tree. But Apollo did not care about this metamorphosis! He was really in love and took her to be his tree and to use it as a crown and to put them in the head of the warriors after a victory. So she became the crown of laurels for those who came back victorious form battles.

Yes, when real love comes to your heart then you do not care anything else; but having what your heart loves!

IF YOU WERE IN LOVE YOU KNEW WHAT THAT WAS!
THE MEANING OF APOLLO AND DAPHNE’S
 MYTH OF LOVE:
When your have a cupid’s arrow deep down into your heart then you realize LIFE IS MEANINGLESS WITHOUT LOVE!  Apollo had to taste one of Cupid’s arrows to lose his calmness and his strength! The brave god, son of Jupiter, was overcome by Cupid’s power!
No, you misunderstand if you think someone can defeat cupid or Venus. Not a living creature can do that. Whoever thinks he can live without love is totally wrong. If someone thinks he cannot fall in love is totally wrong. Actually, he/she is punished by the goddess of love for mistakes made in life. What kind of mistakes? Playing with other people feelings!
No, my friends do not ever play with other persons’ feelings because Cupid and Venus will revenge the victim and you will suffer that lack of real love.
The crown of Daphne, the Crown that Apollo was giving to those who came back as victors of war, is the crown of real love! Love defeats ideas, fears, doubts, limits, preconceptions, pride, believes and so on!
Daphne represents what is beyond the limits; what is unattainable; what is beyond our hope, ideas, fear and so on.
Apollo, the lover and perfect match, represents the fight to reach what is beyond our power and the ability to resign anything for love.
Do not ever ask, the person who you love, to be the way you want because love will run away from you. If you want love then accept it as it is! Do not let your mind control you heart because if you do so then you will lose the magic touch of love!
No, do not think your mind can control or defeat love. Go back to Psyche and cupid’s myth of love and you will find that when your mind wants to put conditions, when your mind wants to control love then it goes away because your mind cannot control love. If you belive you can do so then you are not in love!

ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE!

Love, how great it is! Isn’t it the strongest feeling of human heart? Who can live without it? Whoever thinks he/she can, I totally disagree. Living without love is not living. Living with the person u love is real life!

Love makes people change, be kind, be gentle, be happy and, best of all, think more of another person than oneself.

A person in love will try anything to get the love his/heart needs! Orpheus went really far, but something was wrong!

Orpheus music was impressive! His marvelous feeling for music was given by his mother Calliope, muse of epic poetry and daughter of Zeus/Jupiter. Apollo gave him the lyre. No wonder why he was able to enchant mortals and animals; even the gods were Orpheus’ fans. As you can see real music is divine as Orpheus’ music was!

There is a classic opera “Orfeo & Euridice” by Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1887). I really enjoyed this opera for two reasons:

     1)      It was the first opera I saw (several years ago) and it made me change the idea I had about operas.

    2)      The music and the story are wonderful!

     3) Opera is better that a theater. Why? Because artists must go in harmony with music, they cannot go before or after the music; but at the very same time. It is just amazing!

Orpheus was really blessed and lived in harmony with nature. He married Eurydice and they were living in total happiness, full of love and peace.

Eurydice was in the forest with her maids when a snake bit her and she died. Nobody wanted to tell Orpheus the bad news. They knew how much he loved her and they did not want to bring sorrow to his happy life. Nevertheless, someone had to do it.

Orpheus received the news and obviously he felt really, really sad. He did not want to accept that. He knew his life, without his love, had not reason. So he decided to go to the underworld to rescue her and bring her back to life! (I wonder why she did not go to heaven; there is a reason and I will tell you at the end)

The gods felt pity on him; Amor (Latin word for Cupid or Eros) came to help him. Orpheus managed to go to Hades; Charon (the ferryman who was taking dead people to the other side) did not want him to take him because he was alive. Our hero played his lyre making Charon to be enchanted. Orpheus was already on the other shore when Charon recovered consciousness!

At the other side he used his wonderful lyre to overcome all kind of obstacles. Finally Persephone (wife of Pluto) was convinced by his songs and his lyre. She went to talk to Pluto making him to remember how he got her to Hades for love. So the Lord of Hades accepted to give Eurydice back under one condition: Orpheus would not see her till both are out from Hades.

Orpheus took her and obviously his heart was full of happiness. Nevertheless, he started to doubt. He was wondering: what if she was not his love one? What if Pluto was deceiving him? So he felt the need to know the truth. So before they arrived into the world of light he… Yes! He turned back to make sure he was taking Eurydice and not other person. Oh! What a terrible mistake! What a horrible feeling watching her love going back to Hades and saying: “Farewell.”

How different it could have been if he had trusted the word of Pluto, if he had waited to the right moment. But his doubts made him loose what he loved the most!

He wanted to follow her into Hades, but not permit was extended this time. He had to return with that horrible grief in his heart!

Finally he died! Some versions say he was beheaded and some nymphs found his head and Apollo took his head to his oracle where it was singing and making prophecies. Other say Zeus sent a thunder to take his life. On the opera by Willibald Gluck you see Apollo coming to take him to heaven, but his grief was not overcome!

THE MEANING!

Love, how wonderful love is!
Music and love are related! The gods love music and music inspires the greatest feelings in the human heart!
Orpheus was a mortal who had a great gift: Music. He used it to calm beasts, animals, human and even gods. The power of the word is known; we can help someone with nice words full of comprehension and love; but we can destroy other person’s life with criticism and slander.
Orpheus had that gift of playing music, but not just that. He was able to write poems too. He was the happiest mortal on earth and when he married Eurydice he was more than happy! He was spreading his happiness, through his music, to everyone and everything.
When he lost Eurydice he lost everything. His whole world came apart and nothing could bring joy or peace to his heart. So he decided to go for his love.
He went to the underworld to look for her, but… Was he the first one to do a task like that? Was he the only one to do something like that? No, he was not the only one. Hercules fought death to bring back a friend’s wife and he did. Let’s remember Quertzalcoatl, the Aztec plumed serpent, who went to the underworld to rescue the bones of his ancestors!
Does it mean anything? Yes, of course it does. What is the underworld for ancient civilizations? It was the subconscious! It was depicted as a huge cave, sometimes, as Plato did on his myths about the cave.
The subconscious is dark! It means, it is not easy to see it. All our negative thoughts and negative emotions come from there. Our deepest fears and desires come from it.
Whoever wants real love must fight against those negative thoughts and negative emotions. Please refer to HUMAN SACRIFICES to understand this better.
So, Eurydice represents real love. You must be willing to do anything for love if you really want to be happy! You can have everything in life, but without love it means nothing and you cannot be real happy.
Orpheus defies everything till the point he put in risk his life. He almost did his deed with success; but something went wrong. What was it? HE DOUBTED! His mid put doubts on him and finally he gave up and look behind him just to see Eurydice to be lost forever!
Do you remember the myths of Cupid and Psyche? Well, Psyche doubted too. What was the outcome? She lost Cupid and only after several trials she was able to recover him.
Loving is part of our heart. It is not part of our mind. When our mind gets into love then we lose it! When you doubt of love then your mind is controlling or trying to control your feelings. Real love has power over your mind, but if you let your mind to control your feelings that you will lose it!
Let your love flow free and give freedom to the ne you love. Love and freedom live together. Love does not make slaves. Love treats nice, tender and properly to the love one!
If you are in love be gentle and nice to your lover, if you are not then give freedom to the other person. LOVE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN THE UNIVERSE!

THE LOVE OF PLUTO AND PERSEPHONE (PROSERPINA).

Pluto was the lord of the underworld. He was defeated by love as every mortal or god! Remember: LOVE IS THE STRONGEST FORCE OF THE UNIVERSE!

Venus sent cupid to bring love to Pluto. Venus is always playing with mortals and gods. She loves to show them how beauty and grace (Women) are stronger than strength (Men). I am not feminist, it is just a fact! Remember: all the gods gave the best to Pandora (the first woman).

It does not matter if men believe that or not, but we are always seduced by grace and beauty.
The matter is: Pluto was defeat when he saw Persephone (Proserpina).  Pluto abducted as soon as he saw her. He was not able to resist the arrow from Cupid. So, he took Persephone to the underworld to take her as his wife.

Ceres (Proserpine’s mother), the goddess of harvest, stopped the growth of plants. So Jupiter (Zeus) sent Mercury (Hermes) to talk to Pluto the ruler of the underworld.

Pluto accepted to return her, but he gave her SIX seeds of pomegranate. Why six and not 5 or 7 or…? The answer below, keep reading. It was a trick because anyone who ate that fruit was not able to return to the livings’ world. The catch: Persephone was condenmed to return to Pluto’s kingdom every six months.
Ceres made the trees and plants to show all kind of beautiful flowers to welcome her daughter, who was coming from her husband’s house; but… Ceres made the trees and plants to wither. Yes, of course, it means the change of the seasons. Everybody is able to bring out that conclusion, but is there something else about the meaning?
Yes, you know me: I go beyond what the naked eye can see… If you want to know more about this, please return and we talk…

INTERESTED ABOUT THE MEANING OF NUMBER SIX?

OK, HERE IT IS:

Pluto was the brother of Zeus (The ruler god). Seth (In Egypt) became enemy of his brother Osiris. Tezcatlipoca was the enemy of Quetzalcoatl (His brother). I think this is an interested point, a really interesting relationship. I think we should talk about this topic later on this blog.

The matter now is that Pluto, the ruler of the underworld, took Persephone into his kingdom. The final deal was to stay with him for six month and then go for six months. Some versions say four months. Actually, I think the real number is six.

Let’s go to Pluto’s love first. Those six months represent the real love that endures all kind of trials and that is why Pluto is able to handle being without his love for six months. He made her a queen (See picture on the right hand), not a slave. Love makes us kings and queens, but not slaves! A relationship where one is a king or queen and the other a slave is not a good relationship and it is not love, but dependency and it comes out from fear. Fear and love are not compatible. The first one gives you freedom, the latter gives you slavery. How could someone who loves make a salve out of the person who is the reason of his life? Never! Actually, LOVE IS RENUNCIATION TO YOUR OWN HAPPINESS IN ORDER TO MAKE HAPPY THE OTHER PERSON!

Women, usually, are more related to love than men. Reason: Men think of sex, women look for love.

LET’S GO TO THE NUMBER SIX!

The number six for ancient wisdom was the number of love. It is not a coincidence that sex and six are so similar. That is true in Spanish too (seis and sexo). Love, of course, is related to sex. It does not mean that having sex is making love. Most of people think so, but actually, for ancient wisdom it was not the same. In other words, you can have sex and you might not love the person. That is why split comes later.

When there is real love then split is not a choice. Real love comes out from the deepest part of your heart! When there is not real love then sexual relationship comes out from the most superficial part of a selfish person. Actually, it comes out from the thirst of sexual pleasure.

On the other hand, when real love is within a relationship then it endures with or without sex. But, sex is the most beautiful expression of love.

When two persons are in real love (Beyond desire, mind, selfish, etc.) then we have a couple living real love. Both make the number twelve (6 + 6 = 12). What does number mean? There were 12 works for Hercules, 12 zodiacal signs, 12 senses (5 from the body and 7 are the chakras), 12 the main Greek and Roman gods… Oh! Yea, Jesus had 12 disciples. He brought the philosophy of the heart and the ANAHATA CHAKRA, the chakra of the heart, has 12 petals!

The number twelve means total love and therefore renunciation to your own life for the safe or other beings!

I could explain more about these two numbers, but it is ok for now.

Remember: LOVE WITHOUT RENUNCIATION IS NOT LOVE!

PERSEUS AND ANDROMEDA: A GREAT HERO IN LOVE!

I think most of the people heard about this great myth. We usually pay attention to the deeds of Perseus and we do not focus on the meaning of love. Well, let me, at this time, to focus this tale on that subject and, maybe, another time we talk about the meaning of the deeds of the hero.

Love is the most marvelous thing in the universe. It can make anybody a hero. Love transforms any person into a different being.

OH GREAT HEROES!
OH GODS AND DEMIGODS!
YOU CANNOT DENY THE POWER OF LOVE!
THE POWER OF A WOMAN’S SMILE AND A SEDUCTIVE FACE!
OH WOMEN! YOUR POWER IS IN YOUR HEART AND THE DESTINY OF MEN IN YOUR HANDS!

Perseus, being in love, has no other choice but to face destiny and it is even under the risk of losing his own life! The great hero does not even think about the dangerous mission, but to save his love: Andromeda!

He has to defeat the Kraken, a very powerful titan of the Greek Mythology. But first, he has to discover the way to fulfill his task. So he has to look for the three Gorgon, old witches who eat human flesh! After that Perseus most face Medusa, as told by the Gorgon. Medusa, a monster half woman and half serpent who has serpents instead of hair! Just a glance to her body or face turns anybody into rock, even if she is dead! The great hero beheaded the Medusa. The idea, as we all know, is simple: Perseus must make the Kraken to see the head of Medusa so it is turned into rock.

Finally, the lover of Andromeda achieves the victory and the price was ANDROMEDA: LOVE!

We could explain the meaning of this great battle, but for now, as I said in the beginning, we will focus on the meaning of love.

LOVE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, BUT FOR THE ONE WHO WANTS TO PAY THE PRICE!
LOVE IS NOT FREE BECAUSE WE DO NOT APPRECIATE FREE THINGS.
LOVE ITSELF IS FREE, BUT TO DEVELOP LOVE TAKES STRENGTH, WILL AND PATIENCE.
ONLY THOSE HEROES WITH THOSE VIRTUES CAN ENJOY REAL LOVE!
THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO PAY THE PRICE DO NOT DESERVE LOVE, FOR THOSE ATTRACTION AND PLEASURE IS ENOUGH; BUT IT DOES NOT LAST, IT IS NOT REAL BECAUSE PLEASURE IS NOT FOR EVER!

All the tasks our hero has to go through represent the different problems of life. Every couple must survive many difficulties, but must of people have not the strength or the will or the patience to keep fighting for who they love.

Modern people want things easy, they do not want problems; but we all need problems to develop ourselves, to improve ourselves, to learn and become better men and women. Life is a school where you are to learn and the tests are the problems of life.

Love is for the heroes, for those women and men who want to make happy the other person even if they have to give up what they want!

Love is for brave ones who want to go beyond the physical appearance of the body and look into the wonderful heart of the love one.

OH YOU, WHO IS IN LOVE,
ARE YOU SURE TO RISK YOUR LIFE FOR LOVE?
OH YOU, WHO DREAM ABOUT LOVE,
ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE UP WHAT YOU WANT?
OH YOU, WHO IS IN LOVE,
ARE YOU READY TO DEFEAT YOURSELF?

NARCISUS!

Narcisus was born with a weird fate.He was the son of Cephisus (A river god) and Liriope (A nymph). He grew up very handsome. But he was no interested in nobody. It is said he was very arrogant and proud of himself. This is something the gods, according to my understanding, never like. Gods ask for humbleness and they punish, very often, those who are not.

Well, Echo was a nymph punished by Hera, Zeus's wife, to repeat the last word she heard. She got totally in love with Narcisus. But he, as always, did not care about it. She felt totally despair so she vanished and only her voice (echo) was left.

Nemesis was the spirit of divine retribution against those who succumb to hubris (arrogance before the gods). She, according to a version. make Narcisus to come to see his face on a pool. He was really surprised with the image on the  pool, his own reflection. He got in love of it. So he was not able to move from there. He was watching his face day and night till he die.

Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, a fixation with oneself.

THE MEANING:

I think this is so obvious, but let's say something: Nobody likes another person telling great things about himself/herself.  It is really annoying when people are talking about themselves all the time. Usually they make mistakes, because they are not perfect, but people like to scorn them when this happen because they like to punish those kind of people.

A WISE MAN OR WOMAN IS ALWAYS HUMBLE. WISE PEOPLE ARE LIFE A ICE BERG. THEY SHOW ONLY A LITTLE OF THEMSELVES. THE REST COMES OUT WHEN NEEDED.
